This subject provides participants with the opportunity to investigate an aspect of teaching and learning of mutual interest to them and to their departments. Supported by workshops, individual mentors and networks, each participant develops a complete and viable research proposal in an area of relevance to teaching and learning in their department/faculty. The completed report may subsequently be used as the basis for an application for funding and/or further research studies such as a Masters-level research project.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Plan and develop a detailed proposal for a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) project in higher education;
- Demonstrate detailed knowledge of the research literature in one area of teaching and learning;
- Critically review and evaluate methods used to undertake SoTL; and
- Prepare and present an oral argument for a SoTL or research proposal.
Generic skills
On completing this subject, participants should be able to:
- Critically analyse theories and principles and apply them appropriately to a range of contexts;
- Prepare written papers for effective communication with colleagues;
- Present material in a clear, organised, stimulating and engaging way;
- Reflect upon and analyse the effectiveness of their activities; and
- Work constructively with peers to evaluate and support one another's work.
