Overview
The History curriculum offers students the opportunity to understand the worlds of the past, to reflect on the making of the present, and to develop the capacities to locate information, analyse evidence, think critically, and communicate effectively. The discipline offers both great range and detailed attention to particular places, times, and themes. Courses extend from the medieval world and the great empires to our most immediate past; all offerings reflect the latest developments in historical research and vocational practice.
Intended learning outcomes
Students who complete the Graduate Certificate in Arts in this area of specialisation should:
- demonstrate a detailed knowledge of several periods or cultures of the past;
- locate, identify, analyse and contextualise materials that provide insight into the past;
- display a critical understanding of a variety of conceptual approaches, both national and international, to interpreting the past;
- understand the development of the discipline of History, its past and present;
- understand how historians relate and respond to their social, cultural, and political environments; and Demonstrate the ability to research on a defined topic according to the methodological and ethical conventions of the discipline;
- engage with, and respond to, divergent historical interpretations using critical thinking skills, including through student-centred group work;
- demonstrate a high level of clarity and fluency in communication and collaboration, including oral and written presentation of evidence-based narratives and effective work in small groups; and
- reflect critically on the knowledge and skills developed in the study of history, and on how these might be applied to scholarship, employment and citizenship.
