The Master of Commerce (Accounting) represents years 1 and 2 of the new 5 year doctoral program in Accounting and is only available to students pursuing the doctoral program.
Entry requirements
1. In order to be considered for entry, applicants must have completed:
- a four-year undergraduate degree in accounting, finance, economics or other quantitative discipline with a weighted average mark of at least 75% (H2A), or equivalent; and
- a personal statement outlining why they wish to be considered for the course; and
- the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT), unless the applicant has met one of the approved conditions for GMAT exemption.
Meeting these requirements does not guarantee selection.
2. In ranking applications, the Selection Committee will consider:
- prior academic performance; and
- the personal statement; and
- the GMAT score unless the applicant has met one of the approved conditions for GMAT exemption.
3. The Selection Committee may seek further information to clarify any aspect of an application in accordance with the Academic Board Rules on the use of selection instruments.
4. Applicants are required to satisfy the university’s English language requirements for graduate courses. For those applicants seeking to meet these requirements by one of the standard tests approved by the Academic Board, performance band 6.5 is required.

- Critically evaluate the research design choices made in the accounting research literature.

Master of Commerce (Accounting) Course Progression Rules:
- students must obtain an overall average grade of 75% or higher in year one subjects to be able to progress to year two of the course.
Progression to the PhD
To successfully move from the Master of Commerce (Accounting) into the PhD students must:
- complete the Master of Commerce (Accounting) with an average grade of 75% or higher;
- achieve an average grade of 75% or higher in the compulsory Accounting subjects taken in years one and two of the course (Please note that if a student is approved to take a subject in lieu of a compulsory accounting subject, the grade in the other subject will be included in the calculation of the average);
- achieve a grade of 80% or higher in ACCT90003 Accounting Research Report.
