Intended learning outcomes
Students who complete the Professional Certificate in English Language should have:
- developed an advanced understanding of the content knowledge from Linguistics and Applied Linguistics required to teach the English Language components of the F-10 or VCE English Language curricula;
- acquired a comprehensive understanding of and ability to use the metalanguage and terminology needed to effectively teach the F-10 or VCE English Language curricula;
- built on their existing knowledge to gain additional expertise in the analysis of texts and identification of specific types of grammatical and discourse phenomena;
- be able to critically evaluate English Language teaching resources in the light of evidence from research and scholarship; and
- develop their skills in construction and preparation of classroom materials for the teaching of English Language.
Generic skills
Graduates who successfully complete the Professional Certificate should have developed :
- the ability to direct their own learning and continue to develop their professional practice;
- an understanding of the significance of developing their practice on the basis of evidence from research and scholarship;
- the ability to critically evaluate oral and written material relevant to their teaching practice;
- enhanced analytic and problem-solving abilities;
- the ability to demonstrate themselves as skilled communicators who can effectively articulate and justify their practices as knowledgeable agents of change; and
- the ability to work in teams with skills in cooperation, communication and negotiation.
Graduate attributes
The Professional Certificate will enable graduates to further their development of the following University of Melbourne Graduate Attributes:
Academically excellent
Graduates will develop their knowledge of English Language grammar and sociolinguistics based on recent research and scholarship and their understanding of the ways in which this underpins the teaching and learning of relevant content within the school curriculum. They will demonstrate a high level of achievement in problem-solving, analytical reasoning and communication. Graduates will be critical and creative thinkers, with an aptitude for continued self-directed learning, and will be adept at learning in a range of ways, including through information and communication technologies.
Knowledge across disciplines
Graduates will examine critically, synthesise and evaluate knowledge across discipline and sub-discipline areas relevant to the teaching and learning of English Language within a school setting. They will expand their analytical and cognitive skills through learning experiences and have the capacity to participate fully in collaborative learning and to confront unfamiliar problems. As a result of completing the Professional Certificate, they will have acquired a set of flexible and transferrable skills that will allow creative approaches to student learning and engagement to be implemented.
Leaders in communities
Graduates of the Professional Certificate will be able to initiate and implement constructive change in their school communities with an awareness of community needs. This may include, but will not be limited to, engaging in meaningful public discourse and mentoring more junior colleagues in education.
Attuned to cultural and linguistic diversity
Graduates will be working within organisations characterised by cultural and other forms of diversity. Graduates will value different cultures and social groups and the differing communicative practices of these groups (including Indigenous Australians), and will be well-informed citizens able to contribute to their communities wherever they choose to live and work.
Active global citizens
The course will assist graduates in the development of a broad global understanding of how education in general, and knowledge of language and communication in particular, can contribute to the further improvement of human rights, social inclusion, and ethics.
