This advanced art history subject will allow students to work closely with Old Master prints in the University’s Baillieu Library collection, one of the largest graphic works collections in Australia. Students will be introduced to the field of print media scholarship through important texts by the world’s leading print scholars and curators. Themes addressed in this study include: the materiality of the printed image, the role of prints in Early Modern society, questions of originality, copying, and forgery in print media, and the relationship of prints to other artistic media. Working in teams, students will devise a proposed print exhibition.
Intended learning outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- understand the techniques and media of print making;
- acquire curatorial experience and qualifications; engage in group problem solving and working collaboratively;
- understand the breadth of print media scholarship; and
- produce original scholarship on print media.
Generic skills
At the completion of this subject, students should gain the following generic skills:
- the ability to conceptualise theoretical problems, form judgements and arguments and communicate critically, creatively and theoretically;
- bthe ability to communicate knowledge intelligibly and economically;
- the ability to manage and organise workloads; and
- the ability to participate in team work.

Additional details
- Presentation (equivalent to 1,000 words) due in weeks 10 and 11 of semester (20%)
- Research-based exhibition catelog essay (3,000 words) due in the examination period (60%)
- Exhibition review (1,000 words) due in week 5 (20%)
- Hurdle: Students are required to attend a minimum of 80% of classes in order to pass this subject and regular class participation is expected.
