This unit will focus on advanced issues in the diagnosis of speech, language and swallowing disorders from childhood to adulthood. There will be an emphasis on presenting and supporting students to problem solve real-world clinical dilemmas regarding the use of existing best practice classification systems to refine diagnoses for clients. In particular, clients with complex co-morbid conditions will be presented. The subject will also cover the importance of, and processes for, working with other health professional colleagues in the measurement and interpretation of evidence to guide their diagnosis for speech, swallowing and language disorder.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject students should:
- Understand and describe the principles and processes of differential diagosis in speech and language disorders
- Understand and describe a range of complex and co-morbid speech and language disorders across the lifespan, including any associated swallowing difficulties/disorder
- Evaluate and interpret clinical data from clients with complex speech and language disorders across the lifespan
- Evaluate and interpret the personal and environmental issues that influence the complexity of clients' speech and language disorders
- Apply diagnostic and intervention strategies suitable to complex speech and language disorders across the lifespan
- Understand and identify the interprofessional processes in differential diagnosis for complex speech and language disorders
- Understand and describe the multi-modal assessment and intervention strategies required in the clinical management of clients with complex communication needs
- Select a range of resources (low and high technology) in the area of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC)

On completion of this subject students should show:
- an ability to evaluate and synthesise information in a flexible manner
- a capacity to articulate their knowledge in both oral and written formats
