This subject examines the processes of communicating across cultures. Topics include language as a manifestation and reflection of culture; language, culture and identity; politeness and "face"; cultural variations in nonverbal communication; power in interpersonal interactions; negotiating a shared basis for communication; discourse variations between cultures; and intercultural gender awareness.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- be aware of the complex relationship between language and culture;
- understand how language and culture are involved in interpersonal interactions;
- critically examine their own practice in intercultural interactions; and
- understand the cultural issues at stake in interpersonal situations

Prerequisites
To enrol in this subject, you must be admitted in the Master of English in a Global Context (MC-ENGGC). This subject is not available for students admitted in any other courses.

- 3 x reading reflections - 1,500 total , due end semester, (25%)
- 1,500 word essay 1, due late semester, (25%)
- 2,000 word essay 2, due end semester, (50%)
Hurdle Requirement: Attendance at all classes (tutorial/seminars/practical classes/lectures/labs) is obligatory. Failure to attend 80% of classes will normally result in failure in the subject.
