Topics selected in consultation with the coordinator. Enrolment in the thesis is across two consecutive semesters and students must enrol in the subject in each semester to ensure they are meeting the full 50 point requirement for the year-long subject.
Intended learning outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students should have:
- developed their skills in the forms of scholarly and critical analysis and inquiry appropriate to literary studies;
- brought an independent research project from inception and development to completion;
- learnt how to develop their research ideas and improve their writing skills under supervision; and
- significantly enhanced their understanding of a specific area or methodology in literary studies.
Generic skills
At the completion of this subject, students should gain generic skills in the following areas:
- conceptualising and planning a substantial project of original research;
- presenting material in draft form and engaging productively with a supervisor;
- consolidating and enhancing established skills in engaging creatively with a critical field;
- synthesising critical arguments and debates;
- testing and developing new research methods in relation to ongoing debates;
- enhancing drafting and writing skills, in both a critical and creative manner; and
- managing time and study resources over a sustained period of time.

Assessment
Additional details
This assessment statement applies to the entire enrolment across Parts 1 and 2 of the subject (i.e. ENGL40026 and ENGL40027 together):
- A thesis of 15,000 words on an approved topic written over two consecutive semesters 100% (due at the end of the second semester of enrolment).
- Hurdle: Students are required to attend a minimum of 80% of supervision meetings in order to qualify to have their written work assessed. Any student who fails to meet this hurdle without valid reason will not be eligible to pass the subject. All required written work must be submitted in order to pass the subject. Essays submitted after the due date without an extension will be penalised 2% per day. Essays submitted after two weeks of the assessment due date without a formally approved application for special consideration or an extension will only be marked on a pass/fail basis if accepted.

This subject is taught over two consecutive semesters. Total time commitment for the subject is approximately 680 hours, inclusive of two semesters (thesis Part 1 and Part 2).
Additional delivery details
This is part of a 50 point thesis subject, continuing over two consecutive study periods.
Students are required to enrol in:
- ENGL40026 English & Theatre Studies Thesis Part 1 (25 points) and
- ENGL40027 English & Theatre Studies Thesis Part 2 (25 points), consecutively.
Students will receive a ‘CNT’ grade in the part 1 and results will be entered if and when both part 1 and 2 are completed.
