Through a lecture and seminar series, this subject will introduce students to the history of colour as seen through a range of cultural traditions, including First Nations, European, Arabic, Chinese, Indian and Asia-Pacific lenses and others, and explore the symbolic and optical qualities as have been applied through historical and cultural contexts. Students will explore the histories and theories of colour from natural pigments for ritualistic cave paintings to contemporary art and science and new and expanding colour spectrums made possible thought new visualisation technologies.
