Professional Practice 2 is a 10-day (or equivalent) work experience subject for students to continue observations and gain further experience of music performance teaching. Where possible students will be placed in a contrasting setting to Professional Practice 1. These settings may include private music studios and group teaching situations in commercial music schools (for example Yamaha Music School) and community music education settings (for example Melbourne Youth Music Council ensembles, Dandenong Ranges Music Council ensembles, Malvern City Band, Australian Boys Choir), as well as primary and secondary schools. These placements will be under the supervision both of in situ teachers/musical directors/tutors and Melbourne Conservatorium of Music academic staff.
During the 10-day placement, students will continue observations of teaching practice and participate extensively in supervised teaching of individual students or groups as required.
Students will create lesson plans that include implementation strategies, and after teaching each lesson, they will receive feedback from their supervisors. Melbourne Conservatorium of Music staff will be present to grade some of this teaching. Students will also be assessed on a personal-professional portfolio that will include observations, lesson planning, implementation, assessment and post-implementation documentation of their teaching experiences.
Prior to, and immediately after the placement, students will attend a 3-hour seminar/workshop to provide an introduction to and reflections on these music performance teaching settings and relevant learning objectives.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- observe and understand the design and implementation of instrumental/vocal teaching and learning programs;
- implement their knowledge of teaching techniques and methods used in individual and/or group teaching contexts;
- describe and critically evaluate their own teaching;
- demonstrate a high level of personal communication skills and the ability to work collegiately;
- competently demonstrate the use of appropriate repertoire in teaching situations on their instrument or voice; and
- present evidence through their personal-professional portfolio to demonstrate their emerging professional practice.
Generic skills
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- demonstrate skills in cooperation and communication that allow for effective working in groups;
- demonstrate the capacity for critical and independent thought and reflection;
- plan effectively to meet preparation deadlines;
- demonstrate skills in evaluative thinking, and in the application of theoretical criteria to practical outcomes; and
- demonstrate analytical skills in the context of verbal and non-verbal communication.

Hurdle Requirements:
- It is a hurdle requirement to pass each component of assessment;
- 100% attendance is required to pass this subject, all missed days must be made up in the student's free time.
