Students will be involved in further study of the pronunciation, articulation, and enunciation of the German language in order to fully convey the emotional expression of operatic singing to ensure a clearer understanding by the audience. This subject continues to develop students’ understanding of the phonetics and phonology of German and the use of the International Phonetic Alphabet. Students will hone their capacity to accurately and appropriately reproduce the speech sounds of German in a sung environment to achieve maximum effect and comprehension. This study of German language will be applied to specific role(s) that students may be undertaking in the operas being performed during the semester and/or to other operatic repertoire. Students will continue the study of the basic features of the German language.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of the subject, students will be able to:
- demonstrate professional level skills in the pronunciation, articulation, and enunciation of the German language in operatic performance
- demonstrate further understanding of the phonetics and phonology of the German language, and its representation in the International Phonetic Alphabet, in opera production relevant to their roles within a fully professional opera company
- demonstrate the capacity to configure the oral tract to accurately reproduce the speech sounds of the different vowels and consonants of German in relation to operatic repertoire
- understand the basics of grammar and syntax for literal translation and interpretation of texts from the repertoire of German opera
- understand and create basic texts in the German language, including professional level communication as appropriate to a working opera professional
Generic skills
On completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- demonstrate the capacity for critical and independent thought and reflection;
- demonstrate skills in evaluative thinking, and in the application of theoretical / analytical criteria to practical outcomes; and
- demonstrate analytical skills in the context of artistic performance
