The subject provides opportunities to extend, deepen and apply knowledge, skills and attributes in the context of a research project.
This subject enables students to engage in the design and implementation of a research project that demonstrates their advanced theoretical knowledge and critical reflection skills. It provides the opportunity for integration of their prior learning form the course, and demonstration of their advanced social work practice and research capacity.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- design, implement and evaluate an evidence-based direct or indirect practice intervention within the context of a practice setting;
- critically analyse and understand the interconnections between social work practice, theory, research, and policy;
- undertake a literature review;
- understand how research method/s are selected and the rationale for using;
- explain how research data is collected and analysed;
- an ability to process and analyse data collected in research projects;
- make appropriate interpretation/s of research data; and
- understand the ethical issues associated with conducting direct or indirect practice intervention and evaluation/research projects within the context of the practice setting.
Generic skills
Students will be provided with the opportunity to practice and reinforce:
- high level written communication skills
- advanced information and interpretation skills
- advanced analytic, integration and problem-solving skills
- demonstrate competence in critical and theoretical thinking through essay writing and online discussions

- Regular written reports to Supervisor on Project Stages (2000 words), throughout study period (20%)
- Online presentation - Research proposal – 20 minutes (2000 words), Week 8 (20%)
- Written assignment – Research Report – 6000 words, end of study period (60%)

Students will familiarise themselves with the online platform which will provide an overview of the subject, assessment requirements and expectations. They will also be provided with information about studying online and informed about the University resources available to them.
