This subject creates the opportunity for the student to apply for and undertake a secondment (or work experience) with a dance company, independent artist or dance industry organisation. The subject has two parts 1) the arrangement and completion of the secondment and 2) the presentation and/or writing, of a consequent piece of work. The student’s particular choice of a secondment (work experience) allows for the implementation of a course of study focussing on a specific dance artist, company, collective or organisation which is relevant to his or her dance development and interests. The connection and interaction with industry figures will potentially create professional links and networks for participants. Post the secondment, the observation and experience of how artists and/or key organisations create artistic work, or fulfil their objectives/s, will extend into ongoing student learning by further investigation and consideration of the skills, knowledge and experiential outcomes that the student consolidates during the secondment. Engagement in this subject will require application of skills and knowledge developed in the Bachelor of Fine Arts (Dance) program to this point and will broaden student understanding and experience of dance practice and the dance profession. Proposals are to be centred around legitimate and realistic plans made with practising dance artists/company/organisations, and/or the secondments, intensives and series of workshops offered by dance companies and organisations or centres at specified times of the year.
The dance artist/company or organisation that agrees to offer a secondment or take on a work experience student will also provide assessment and feedback for the participant. Appropriate risk assessment procedures will be followed.
If Independent Contract A has been completed (in semester 4 second year), or Independent Contract B or C is undertaken at the same time as Industry Project the proposals for these subjects are to be different.
Where possible students will be encouraged to complete the actual secondment central to the subject as an intensive in a non teaching period to facilitate minimal disruption to other subjects which have hurdle and attendance requirements.
A student’s choice of dance company or industry organisation for secondment (or work experience) and hence enrolment in Industry Project may be subject to the dance faculty’s discretion or approval.
Intended learning outcomes
This subject will enable student to:-
- Utilise skills, knowledge and understanding achieved throughout the course up until this point in a professional dance practice/organisation situation.
- Achieve a set educative objectives which align with the activities and tasks undertaken in the secondment/work experience
- Deepen understanding of, and create connections and networks with potential future employers, peers, collaborators and industry organisations
- Observe, experience and participate in a professional environment and exercise creative and/or organisational skills and processes
- Process and present experiences and outcomes via a range of differing methods
- Extend the capacity to access, and then synthesise and evaluate information gained
- Engage in constructive reflection regarding personal skills, attributes, and artistry in response to, and as a consequence of the secondment/ work experience.
- Determine new personal areas of potential learning and artistic pursuit
- Present findings in written, oral or practical forms.
Generic skills
On completion of this subject students should be able to:-
- Plan, negotiate and complete a secondment or work experience period.
- Formulate a set of personal objectives related to the secondment and determine the strategies to achieve them.
- Demonstrate initiative, autonomous work practices and the creative and/or technical skills required within the secondment /work experience context.
- Demonstrate professional work behaviours and etiquette.
- Competently work as a team member and/or take instruction in the secondment/work experience environment.
- Participate in problem solving, creative processes and the completion of tasks as required in the secondment/work experience context.
- Undertake the self reflective analysis required to process, synthesise and evaluate the discoveries, experiences and learning that are outcomes of completing the secondment /work experience
Present information, analysis and further development of secondment outcomes in one or more of the following – written, oral and practical presentations.
