This subject builds upon the theory and practice of teaching second languages established in Languages 1. With an emphasis on the needs of diverse groups of second language learners within the language classroom, the subject further develops Teacher Candidates’ understandings of the fundamentals of methodology, of language learning strategies, motivation issues and the teaching of languages across different contexts. Particular attention will be given to the critique of contemporary issues and debates on second language teaching and learning within Australia and beyond. Overall, the subject aims to further develop Teacher Candidates’ capacity to become reflective practitioners of languages.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject teacher candidates should be able to:

- Show a developed capacity to critically reflect on research into how students learn and understand the concepts, substance, structure and implications for effective teaching practice in Languages education, including the creation of effective learning environments. (Graduate Standards 1.2, 2.1)
- Demonstrate how to set learning goals that provide achievable challenges for Languages students of varying abilities and characteristics. (Graduate Standard 3.1)
- Draw on evidence to select and use appropriate strategies to differentiate teaching to meet specific needs of Languages students, drawing on digital technologies and literacy and numeracy understandings in order to engage and empower Languages students in their learning. (Graduate Standards 1.5, 2.5, 2.6, 3.3 & 3.4)
- Evaluate Language teaching programs to improve learning and to determine the effectiveness of strategies and resources. (Graduate Standards 3.6, 6.1, 6.2 & 6.4)
