Students commence their study of Indonesian language and society through an introduction to basic Indonesian grammar, vocabulary and communicative strategies. Students become familiar with key elements of social interaction in Indonesian, including use of address terms, ways of greeting, and common topics of conversation for people studying or working in Indonesia, such as student and family life and the geography of Indonesia. Using basic sentence structures, students will be able to engage in a variety of interactions, including getting to know people and describing daily activities, as well as reading and writing simple descriptions.
Intended learning outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students should:
acquire introductory understanding of certain aspects of Indonesian society and culture;
be able to interact in Indonesian though simple conversation and to produce and read short written descriptions;
be able to use basic vocabulary and sentence patterns in socially appropriate ways.

Eligibility and requirements
Prerequisites
All students enrolling in Indonesian for the first time are required to complete the online language questionnaire/placement test at http://arts.unimelb.edu.au/asiainstitute/students/placement-tests. This applies to all students, from total beginners through to formal study, such as VCE or equivalent, or informally through family or overseas travel.
Upon completion of the placement test, students will receive an email with the outcome and entry point. Within 5 working days of receiving the email, students' study plans will be updated and students will be able to self-enrol into the first subject of their entry point. The results of the test are binding and enrolment can only be changed with approval from the coordinator of the language major.
It is recommended that students undertake the language placement test at least two weeks prior to the commencement of semester.

Students who have successfully completed the following are not eligible to enrol: INDO20010 Indonesian 1A; INDO30012 Indonesian 1A.

- Two pieces of written works, 200 words each due early and late semester (20%)
- A journal ongoing throughout semester (10%)
- Three 1 hour revision tests due early, mid and late semester (10% each)
- A 2 hour written examination due during examination period (30%)
- A 5-minute oral examination due during examination period (5%)
- Class participation throughout semester (5%)
Hurdle requirement: Class attendance is required for this subject; if you do not attend a minimum of 80% of classes without an approved exemption you will not be eligible for a pass in this subject.
Note: Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at 10% per day. In-class tasks missed without approval will not be marked. All pieces of written work must be submitted to pass this subject.
