In this subject, students are introduced to the main concepts of learning-oriented assessment. The subject explores the differences between learning-oriented assessment and other language assessments and provides an introduction to the use of standards and frameworks. Participants will learn the key types of language assessments which promote learning and will have an opportunity to develop their own assessments and receive feedback on these from peers. Participants will also have the opportunity to learn how to evaluate learning-oriented language assessments and assessment systems.
Intended learning outcomes
- Gain an understanding of key types of learning-oriented language assessments (CLO2)
- Ability to identify how learning-oriented assessments relate to language standards and frameworks (CLO2, CLO3)
- Learn how students can become active agents in learning-oriented language assessment (CLO2, CLO1)
Generic skills
- Graduates should develop the following generic skills: • Ability to direct their own learning, plan their own work and continue to develop their professional practice; • Understand the significance of developing their practice on the basis of evidence from research; and scholarship; • Be able to critically evaluate material in different modalities relevant to their teaching practice; • Develop their analytic and problem-solving abilities; • Be skilled communicators who can effectively articulate and justify their practices as knowledgeable agents of change; and • Ability to work in teams with skills in cooperation, communication and negotiation.
