This subject will outline the technique of using ultrasound to guide percutaneous procedures. Procedures will include vessel access, nerve blocks, and trauma related procedures. There will be an elective of either "Nerve Blocks" or "Critical Care Procedures".
Topics include:
- Ultrasound Guided Vascular Access
- Nerve Blocks-Upper Limb
- Nerve Locks-Lower Limb
- Nerve Blocks-Peripheral Nerves
- Nerve Blocks-Abdominal and Thoracic
- Focused Abdominal Scan in Trauma
- Additional Ultrasound in Trauma
- Assessment of Flow and Stenosis in Vessels
- Critical Care Procedures
Intended learning outcomes
The completion of the subject, students should:
Elective 1
a) Understand ultrasound guided upper limb nerve blocks
b) Understand ultrasound guided lower limb nerve blocks
c) Understand ultrasound guided abdominal and thoracic nerve blocks
d) Understand ultrasound guided deep cervical plexus and peripheral nerve blocks
Elective 2
a) Basic assessment of cerebral blood flow
b) Basic DVT assessment
c) Additional procedures in Trauma
d) Ultrasound guided airway management
- Understand the approaches and techniques of ultrasound guided percutaneous procedures.
- Understand ultrasound guided Vascular access
- Understand ultrasound guided procedures used in trauma
Generic skills
- Enhance time utilisation
- Improve written skills and problem solving skill
All students are expected to have access to a computer that can operate a Windows platform or simulation.

Eligibility and requirements
Prerequisites
To enrol in this subject, you must be admitted in either the Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma in Clinical Ultrasound or Master of Clinical Ultrasound. This subject is not available for students admitted in any other courses.

Assessment
Additional details
- One open - book multiple choice examination consisting of 50 questions, students will have 1 week to complete the examination during the assessment period at the end of the semester, (80%)
- Completion of self assessment modules at the end of each tutorial, progressively through the semester, (20%)
Note: These are completed in the workbooks issued to students and it is a requirement that these workbooks are signed and returned for assessment.

Time commitment details
170 hours per 12.5 credit point subject
Additional delivery details
Course materials will be distributed via mail to students.
The course is 1 semester full-time or 2 semesters part-time via distance education. A semester duration is 12 weeks. For students completing full-time there will be four subjects per semester, and for part-time, two subjects per semester. Subjects must be taken in sequence.
