As a result of a process of globalisation at both societal and organisational level, it has become increasingly important to be aware of cultural differences and to be able manage culturally diverse organisations. In this subject you will learn about the challenges that managers of both domestic and international businesses face in managing across cultural boundaries. The following topics will be covered in detail in this subject: cross-cultural communication, negotiation and conflict resolution, management of a multi-cultural workforce, the role of mental models and schemata in intercultural interactions, leadership and motivation across cultures, the role of language in international business, and of global teamwork.
Intended learning outcomes
- Demonstrate knowledge and comprehension of the main theories, models and concepts related to cross-cultural management
- Be able to apply these theories, models and concepts to different scenarios as presented in case studies and exercises, as well as to their own experiences
- Be able to analyse and synthesise different theories, models and concepts and critically evaluate their usefulness in addressing the problems of managing across cultural borders
