Ethical Leadership is the GCALL’s foundation subject, offered as a week-long residential intensive. It provides doctoral candidates an interdisciplinary breadth and cohort experience, and the opportunity to study the history, principles and practices of ethical leadership. The course will be taught through a mixed mode of seminars, lectures, workshops and case studies, with an emphasis on collaborative learning and team-based problem solving. Topics covered include: an introduction to philosophies of power and leadership from antiquity to the present day; the self in leadership; global sector trends and cultures of leadership across educational, corporate, Government and non-Government organisations; inter-professional relationships in practice.

Intended learning outcomes

Doctoral candidates who complete this subject will be able to:



  • Demonstrate a breadth of knowledge commensurate with the depth of their disciplinary expertise;
  • Demonstrate a familiarity with key thinkers in the history and philosophy of leadership from antiquity to the present day;
  • Demonstrate a knowledge and appreciation of the complex social, ethical and cultural contexts of leadership;
  • Communicate this understanding effectively through oral and written presentations;
  • Articulate their own personal and social values in this context.

Generic skills

Doctoral candidates who complete this subject will be able to :

  • Apply research skills and specialist knowledge in new contexts;
  • Analyse leadership structures in a range of contexts from a variety of different perspectives;
  • Identify and develop key learning and leadership strengths in themselves and their peers;
  • Communicate effectively to non-specialists.
