This subject is designed to introduce students to advanced Aural awareness concepts, including strategies for enhancing perception in highly chromatic tonal environments and atonal environments, techniques for practicing advanced rhythmic and harmonic concepts and transcription technique. All concepts embraced by this course will be explored through practical exercises, listening sessions and transcription.
Intended learning outcomes
On completing this subject students will:
- Transcribe, identify and perform selected melodies , rhythms and harmonic structures
- Identify intervals in atonal environments
- Sing atonal melodies
- Perform selected polyrhythms
- Reproduce selected material on the student's instrument
Generic skills
On completing this subject students will:
- be critical and creative thinkers, with an aptitude for continued self-directed learning
- be adept at learning in a range of ways, including through information and communication technologies

Successful completion of BFA CMP Contextual Studies 4 components: Harmonic Devices 4 and Rhythmic Devices 4 [H2A minimum result]

- Continuous: Preparation and commitment as demonstrated in class tests and activities embracing all ideas studied and one transcription assignment (equivalent 2,000 words), weeks 1 - 12 (50%)
- 2 x viva voce practical examinations of approx. 10 minutes each on the material studied in this subject. Equivalent 2,000 words. Due in the assessment period (50%)
