This subject will serve as foundation training for students who work in areas where blood or blood products are delivered. It will introduce the student to the important foundation concepts of patient blood management & the National Healthcare Standards relating to blood. The subject will provide the student with specific skills/information they require to participate in the accreditation process for blood and blood products.
It will also serve as a pathway into the existing Graduate Certificate in Transfusion Practice which is designed to give further training on the more advanced concepts of blood management.
Intended learning outcomes
At the completion of the subject, students should be able to;
- Identify key factors associated with the history that has shaped transfusion medicine into current practices
- Demonstrate a comprehension of basic blood haematology, pathophysiology of diseases, investigation and treatment that affect blood and blood components
- Describe the process of transfusion from donation to administration
- Apply quality systems, principles and issues relating to blood and blood products when reviewing blood products management processes
- Link quality policies and management of clinical risk and relate these to blood products management
- Describe and apply practical aspects of transfusion improvement such as audit and data analysis
Generic skills
Achieve a capacity for independent critical thought, rational inquiry and self-directed learning. Demonstrated academic writing skills, presentation skills, problem solving skills, risk assessment & management skills. An ability to incorporate evidence based theoretical principles and concepts into professional practice.
