This subject comprises two modules.
Management of Compromised Patients: Management of patients with speech pathology; cardiovascular conditions; respiratory disease; endocrine, haematological, neurological, psychiatric and neoplastic disoders; and intellectual, physical and sensory disabilities.
Oral Biology: evelops knowledge in the areas of periodontal pathogenesis, systemic conditions and the periodontium; advances in periodontal diagnosis; periodontal treatment including the treatment of furcations, periodontal surgeries, antibiotic and occlusal therapies; periodontal regeneration; re-evaluation, maintenance and the determination of periodontal prognosis.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should:
- Comprehend the relevance to dental care of the various medical conditions and associated therapies;
- Demonstrate understanding of the principles of pharmacology in relation to drugs and other medical agents used in dentistry; and
- Have developed knowledge in the areas of periodontal pathogenesis, system conditions and the periodontium.

On completion of this subject, students should have developed the following skills:

- critical appraisal of research papers;
- leadership and team work;
- self-evaluation/assessment.

Assessment
Additional details
- One 2-hour written examination at the end of Semester 2 (70%).
- An interactive presentation together with a written report of no more than 1000 words at the end of Semester 2 (30%).
Hurdle requirements:
75% attendance at Lectures; 100% attendance at Seminars/Tutorials, Pre-Clinical & Clinical Sessions, and Clinical & Case Simulations/Discussions
