This 12.5-point subject is a core and foundational subject of the Graduate Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (DTM&H). It is designed to provide requisite learning in tropical and global health upon which students will build during subsequent subjects for the course.
The content includes terminology, concepts and data relating to tropical disease and global health, as well essentials of epidemiology and biostatistics method of importance to practitioners of tropical health. Students will have the opportunity to enhance critical appraisal skills, and their overall health literacy, in relation to tropical health publications and information.
This subject will comprise a series of online presentations each linked to assessment tasks. Students must complete this subject before progressing to other subjects within the DTM&H.
Intended learning outcomes
At the completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Correctly use essential terminology pertinent to tropical health.
- Describe key concepts of tropical and global health.
- Articulate current data regarding tropical disease and their key implications for effective clinical, programmatic and policy responses.
- Critically analyse tropical and global health literature.
- Employ the basics of epidemiology and biostatistics.
