This subject will take up questions of creativity, professional practice and critical theory as they relate to creative writing, with a view to students engaging with contemporary Australian and global writing culture and industry. Instead of lectures, students will attend weekly panels presented by leading writers and industry professionals. Each tutorial group will be built around a different practical, collaborative project rooted firmly in the world beyond university.
Intended learning outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students should have:
- an informed and critically discriminating understanding of complex contemporary theoretical and cultural issues related to creative writing;
- the ability to take the step from student-writer and engage in independent, creative and self-reflective professional development;
- the ability to apply, extend and refine skills acquired in their degree on a specific collaborative project;
- the ability to work constructively with peers in a self-directed collaborative project; and
- the ability to develop and complete all phases of self-initiated creative writing projects.
Generic skills
At the completion of this subject, students should gain the following generic skills:
- critical thinking and analysis;
- collaborative work with other students;
- creative thinking and development of ideas and projects;
- communicating thoughts and knowledge;

Eligibility and requirements
Prerequisites
Completion of 37.5 points of level two subjects in creative writing and enrolment in the Bachelor of Arts or Graduate Diploma in Arts is required. Bachelor of Arts students should endeavour to take the capstone subject in their final semester of study after completion of 25 points of 3rd year.

Recommended background knowledge
Usually completion of 12.5 pts of creative writing at first year and 37.5 pts of creative writing at second year.

Additional details
Assignments related to group project work consisting of 2 components:
- 1000 words (or equivalent if undertaking a project across multiple genres or forms) of group work culminating in a group presentation, due during semester (30%)
- 3000 words (or equivalent if undertaking a project across multiple genres or forms) of individual work exploring any of the key themes or ideas in the group project, due during the examination period (70%)
Hurdle requirement:

80% attendance at lectures as well as tutorials.

This Capstone subject is compulsory for New Generation Bachelor of Arts students in order to complete a major in Creative Writing and is only available at 3rd year level. This subject is also available to Bachelor of Arts (Continuing) and Bachelor of Creative Arts students completing a major in creative writing.
