This subject extends the student's understanding of English in use in a range of different contexts, thus extending their English language capabilities. Topics include language and social context, differences between written and spoken English, the language of specific fields, analysing text structures and communication and medium.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- understand how context shapes language and adapt their use of English to particular contexts;
- understand the linguistic variables in language register with a view to shaping their own language appropriately;
- analyse the language of specific fields; and
- analyse text structures with a view to using appropriate structures in their own writing;
- be able to identify the linguistic variables in language and register.

Prerequisites
To enrol in this subject, you must be admitted in the Master of English in a Global Context. This subject is not available for students admitted in any other courses.

- Oral Presentation (1250 words equivalent), due mid semester, (25%)
- Journal Articles (1250 words), due late semester, (25%)
- Report on Language Use in Specific Fields (2500 words), due end semester, (50%)
Hurdle Requirement: Attendance at all classes (tutorial/seminars/practical classes/lectures/labs) is obligatory. Failure to attend 80% of classes will normally result in failure in the subject.
