In this subject Teacher Candidates will plan and execute a substantial research-based project as the second part of their capstone experience in the Master of Teaching (Early Childhood/ Early Childhood and Primary). The research project provides an opportunity for sustained and systematic study of an issue in education practice or policy. Teacher Candidates in the Early Years Option must complete a project focusing on literacy and numeracy in the early years of primary school. Candidates will be supported to define a feasible research question within a given project topic area, using appropriate methodology and methods to respond to the research question. Candidates analyse an existing dataset that will be provided, including relevant literature, policy documents, or empirical data from a project that already has ethics approval. The capstone project will culminate with students synthesizing the findings of their research in the form of a conference paper, journal article or report. Throughout this subject, Candidates will be expected to consider how research can inform and improve education practice.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, Teacher Candidates should be able to:
- Demonstrate a depth of knowledge in an area of contemporary research and practice in education (Graduate Standard 6.2);
- Demonstrate a capacity to engage in reflective, critical discussion of existing research (Graduate Standard 6.2, 6.3);
- Develop a research design to investigate an educational issue;
- Demonstrate an understanding of ethical issues in education research (Graduate Standard 7.1);
- Discuss findings based on systematic analysis of data;
- Identify and explain the implications of their project findings for improving education practice (Graduate Standard 6.4).
- Demonstrate a capacity to extend professional learning through research (Graduate Standard 6.1, 6.2).
