This subject aims to consolidate and enhance the overall language competencies that students from the beginner and intermediate streams have previously acquired in reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students will be introduced to the rich history and diversity of the Francophonie, and invited to explore a series of culturally and linguistically diverse Francophone communities around the world. Through their research projects, the weekly reading, discussions and analysis of a wide range of authentic materials (such as short stories, graphic novels, articles, songs, documentaries, films, interviews, news clips, etc.), students will develop effective and appropriate learning and research strategies such that they become independent and competent users of French.
Intended learning outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students should:
- Be able to use their knowledge of French to read, write, listen and speak confidently and independently on a given specific topic.;
- Be able to read and understand B1+/B2 texts on a specific topic in French fluently, without recourse to translation;
- have learn to use their French reading skills independently to build up contextual information about what they are reading. This includes learning to use monolingual dictionaries and encyclopedias.
- Develop their capacity to undertake independent and original research in French. This includes learning to use citations and references.;
- Be able to critically integrate their knowledge about French and Francophone cultures in their use of the language.
Generic skills
At the completion of this subject, students should:
- Have developed effective language and research skills;
- Be able to time manage and plan;
- Have developed critical thinking and analytical skills;
- Be able to pay attention to detail.

Assessment
Additional details
- One or more in-class written assignments (equivalent to 1000 words) due during semester [30%]
- A written research project and an oral presentation (equivalent to 1500 words) due during the semester [40%]
- A 2-hour final exam (equivalent to 1500 words) during the examination period [30%]
Hurdle Requirement: Students must attend a minimum of 75% of tutorials in order to pass this subject. All pieces of written work must be submitted to pass this subject.
Note: Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at 10% per day and in-class tasks missed without approval will not be marked.
