A research topic will be selected in consultation with the allocated supervisor. Enrolment in the thesis is across two consecutive semesters and students must enrol in the subject in each semester to ensure they are meeting the full 50-point requirement for this yearlong subject. Students are expected to attend regular, documented consultations as arranged with their supervisor over the two semesters of enrolment. Meetings should normally occur at least fortnightly and should be of at least a half an hour induration.
Intended learning outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students should:
- develop and complete a significant research project which is written up and presented as a 15,000 word dissertation;
- develop skills in scholarly investigation and critical analysis appropriate to Gender Studies; and
- enhance research capacity and improve writing skills under supervision.
Generic skills
At the completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to conceptualise and plan a substantial project of original research;
- be able to present material in draft form and engage productively with a supervisor;
- be able tosynthesise critical arguments and debates;
- have enhanced writing skills in both a critical and creative manner;
- be able to manage time and study resources over two consecutive semesters;
- possess advanced skills of critical thinking and analysis;
- possess an ability to communicate knowledge intelligibly, economically and effectively; and
- have an understanding of social, ethical and cultural context.

Prerequisites
This subject is only available to students enrolled in a BH-Arts, Bachelor of Arts (Degree with Honours) or a GD-Arts, Graduate Diploma (Advanced).

Additional details
This assessment statement applies to the entire enrolment across Parts 1 and 2 of the subject (i.e. GEND40006 and GEND40007 together):
- A thesis of 15,000 words on an approved topic written over two consecutive semesters, due at the end of the second semester of enrolment (100%).
- One 20-minute presentation at a work-in-progress seminar, either in the student’s School, or as part of a dedicated, cross-Schools Gender Studies Honours workshop.
Please Note: Students are required to attend a minimum of 80% of supervision meetings in order to qualify to have their written work assessed. Any student who fails to meet this hurdle without valid reason will not be eligible to pass the subject. All required written work must be submitted in order to pass the subject. Work submitted after the due date without an extension will be penalised 10% per day.

Time commitment details
This subject is taught over two consecutive semesters. Total time commitment for the subject is approximately 680 hours, inclusive of two semesters (thesis Part 1 and Part 2).
Additional delivery details
This is part of a 50 point thesis subject, continuing over two consecutive study periods.
Students are required to enrol in:
- GEND40006 Gender Studies Thesis Part 1 (25 points) and
- GEND40007 Gender Studies Thesis Part 2 (25 points), consecutively.
Students will receive a ‘CNT’ grade in the part 1 and results will be entered if and when both part 1 and 2 are completed.
