This subject is designed for students who have completed Japanese 6 and can recognise around 600 kanji characters, or those who have similar experience. This subject will enhance students’ academic literacy skills to conduct research related to Japan/Japanese. Students will establish advanced Japanese literacy and background knowledge in order to engage in international issues surrounding Japan. Students will develop understanding of various genres through reading, and discussing issues in modern Japanese society. Students will be engaged in a small scale research project on chosen topics by further investigating the issue and by writing an opinion piece and presenting it to the class. Through the research project they will develop their research skills and will equip themselves with critical literacy by analysing issues in question from various perspectives and participating in small group discussions.

Intended learning outcomes

On successful completion of this subject, students should:

acquire in-depth knowledge of different aspects of the target language and language education;
develop sensitivity to implied meanings from given texts, and be able to relate them with a certain choice of words, sentence structure and cohesive discourse;
communicate and exchange their views in Japanese with other students of linguistically and culturally diverse backgrounds;
conduct group research activities using emerging technologies;
engage in meaningful discourse with students in Japan and
write an opinion piece based on findings from group project work.

Eligibility and requirements

Prerequisites

Students must have completed JAPN20014 Japanese 6 or equivalent to be eligible to enrol in this subject.

New students will have their appropriate entry point determined by the Japanese Program, based on evidence of prior learning and/or results of a placement test as required. Placement Test information here.

Assessment

Additional details

  • Written work in Japanese, 600 words due throughout semester (15%)
  • An oral assessments, 400 words due mid-semester (10%)
  • A cultural discovery project, 600 words due towards the end of semester (15%)
  • An critical discussion, 400 words due at the end of semester (10%)
  • A 2 hour written examination due during examination period (50%)

Hurdle requirement: Class attendance is required for this subject; if you do not attend a minimum of 80% of classes without an approved exemption you will not be eligible for a pass in this subject.

Note: Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at 10% per day. In-class tasks missed without approval will not be marked. All pieces of written work must be submitted to pass this subject.
