In this subject students will apply theoretical principles in Assessment in Mental Health Nursing to support comprehensive patient assessment, monitoring and care planning in specialty nursing practice. Students will apply current legal, ethical and policy frameworks to their practice. Students will learn to incorporate knowledge and evidence of bio-psycho-social factors influencing patient outcomes, to inform their clinical decision making in practice.
Intended learning outcomes
- Be familiar with attain the core documents in the practice of mental health nursing, including: Standards of Practice (ACMHN, 2010), Scope of Practice (ACMHN, 2013), National Practice Standards for the Mental Health Workforce (2013), and Recognising and Responding to Deterioration in Mental State (ACSHC, 2014).
- Understand and act within mental health law and professional standards and ethics
- Understand the role of lifelong learning, clinical supervision and reflective practice in mental health nursing
- Performing and accurately interpreting mental state examination
- Realise the importance of recovery orientated practice by embedding philosophy into daily nursing activities
- Proficiently and safely conduct medication administration as primary nurse
- Provide information and support to consumers, carers and nomination
Generic skills
On completion of the subject students should have developed the following generic skills of the Melbourne graduate and postgraduate coursework student:
1. A capacity to articulate their knowledge and understanding in oral and written modes of communication.
2. A capacity to manage competing demands on time, including self-directed project work.
3. Advanced competencies in areas of professional expertise and/or scholarship.
4. Advanced skills and techniques applicable to the discipline.
5. Well-developed problem-solving abilities in the discipline area, characterised by flexibility of approach.
6. An ability to evaluate and synthesise the research and professional literature in the discipline.
7. An appreciation of the ways in which advanced knowledge equips the student to offer leadership in the specialist area.

5 x Clinical Skills Assessments (1,00 words total equivalent) due between weeks 1 and 9 (20%)
Written assessment, Reflective practice on five competency skills (1500 words) due week 8 (60%)
Professional Behaviours (supervision log) (500 word equivalent) due week 9 (20%) Hurdle: Students must pass Clinical Portfolio to pass the subject.
