The aim of this subject is to provide students with the fundamentals of peri-operative care. This includes developing appreciation of the biomedical and psychosocial needs of patients and their families across the surgical pathway.
The subject enables integration of knowledge and skills from earlier subjects on Fundamentals of Surgery and Basic Surgical Skills with a focus on application of knowledge. Students will be expected to link care of surgical patients to the nine surgical competencies.
Intended learning outcomes
Students completing this subject should be able to:
- Identify principles of pre-, intra- and post-operative care
- Demonstrate competence in patient-centred surgical assessments of (simulated) patients
- Demonstrate effective skills in consenting patients for surgery including explanations of risk information
- Describe principles of anaesthesia, including complications
- Describe a range of surgical complications including haemorrhage, sepsis and cardiorespiratory conditions
- Assess and manage surgical wounds
- Assess nutritional requirements of the surgical patient in the perioperative phase and methods of delivery
- Describe risks of thrombo embolic complications and methods of treatment including prophylaxis
- Describe the management of sepsis including the principles of antibiotic treatment

Assessment
Additional details
- Oral presentation; 20 minutes - week 5 of semester 1 (40%) - Students will make a 20-minute oral presentation sharing a case study of a patient demonstrating safe perioperative care
- Essay (case study); 3500 words - week 12 of semester 1 (60%) - Students will write a case study on the peri-operative care of a different patient to that shared in the oral presentation. They will be expected to demonstrate evidence for practices to integrate knowledge from prerequisite subjects.
