Overview
The Islamic Studies program offers students an opportunity to study the development of Islamic history, civilisation and culture from an interdisciplinary perspective. Students will gain insight into and understanding of key areas associated with Islamic Studies such as the foundation texts, early and modern history, philosophical and political thought. Muslim societies in majority and minority contexts, unity and diversity, as well as ethnicity and identity. Subjects in Islamic Studies are taught in English.
Intended learning outcomes
Students that complete this major will:

Gain an in-depth knowledge of the religion, culture and civilization of Islam and Muslim societies and develop a capacity to combine knowledge of Islamic studies and one or more discipline.

Gain knowledge of the social and cultural diversity in Muslim societies and develop the skills to work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Gain the ability to set goals and manage time and priorities and work effectively both independently and in groups.

Structure
100 credit points
MAJOR
A major in Islamic studies consists of eight 12.5 point subjects:
Level 1
Two subjects / 25 points
- One Arts Foundation subject (this can count towards major credit points) and
- One level 1 Islamic Studies subject
Level 2
Three subjects / 37.5 points
- ISLAM20003 The Qur'an: An Introduction (compulsory)
- Two level 2 Islamic Studies subjects
Level 3
Three subjects / 37.5 points
- Compulsory capstone subject ISLM30017 Contemporary Challenges and Islam and
- Two level 3 Islamic Studies subjects.
Total 100 points
Note: Level 1 subjects must be successfully completed before progressing to level 2 subjects; level 2 subjects must be successfully completed before progressing to level 3 subjects. Only students completing a major in Islamic Studies can enrol in the capstone subject.

MINOR
A minor in Islamic studies usually consists of six 12.5-point subjects, totalling 75 points, comprising:
Level 1
- One first-year Islamic Studies subject and one Arts Foundation subject.
Level 2
- One compulsory Islamic Studies subject
- One elective Islamic Studies subject
Level 3
- Two Islamic Studies subjects

Islamic Studies: Capstone Subject
The capstone is compulsory for students completing a major in Islamic Studies. The capstone is not available to students completing a minor or breadth studies.
