Overview
Property is about ownership, development, management and occupation of land and buildings. It is concerned with the design, development and management of assets, the processes and finances to bring projects to fruition, together with the stakeholders related to properties, and across the property industry. Just as the property industry embraces multidisciplinary design, buildings and commerce, so will students' studies in property, with subjects undertaken in everything from design, economics and finance, property development and investment, town planning, property valuation, construction, and property and facility management. Students will develop knowledgeable in and research influences of property demand and supply, including macro and micro economics, urban economics, market research, demographics, psychological and social influences together with marketing. Students will also gain an understanding of the legal frameworks within which land and property exists through studies in business law.
Careers and Further Study:Bachelor of Design graduates with a Property major might obtain work in property valuation, property investment, property development, portfolio management, property and facility management, corporate real estate and land economics. The Property major also provides a strong grounding to prepare you for further studies in the Master of Property. Intended learning outcomes
In addition to the generic attributes of the University of Melbourne graduate, Property Major graduates will demonstrate:
- Broad-based appreciation and knowledge of design and built environment;
- Ability to evaluate the dynamics of economic systems, structures and technology for the sustainable and resilient design of cities and space creation;
- Ability to research, analyse and synthesise complex information related to design strategies and design management, and apply the results to the development, construction, financing, management and recycling of land and the built-environment in a way that sustains and enhances utility and value for users and owners;
- Understanding of the complexities and linkages in design processes, and the roles that experts such as architects, planners, builders, investors and lawyers play in leadership and management of transdisciplinary design and development teams;
- Ability to analyse dynamic economic, social, demographic, cultural, business, strategic planning and political trends and create design strategies and concepts for liveable cities and places;
- Ability to identify and evaluate the impact of innovative and emerging trends that are disrupting and transitioning the broader economy and the design of the built form in uncertain environments;
- Ability to synthesise and present complex information verbally and in writing;
- Ability to evaluate and create experimental design for feasibility, development and investment capacity in the built environment through the application of advanced technology;
- Ability to coordinate, collaborate and negotiate in producing multi-disciplinary teams to design, create and develop appropriate solutions for the built environment;
- Practical appreciation of professional ethics, intellectual integrity and social responsibility.
