Overview

The Pathology Honours program in the Department of Clinical Pathology provides an introduction to the challenging area of investigation of disease at the cellular and molecular level. Students will undertake a full-time research project based in a laboratory within the Department or at one of our affiliated institutions. A student undertaking Honours in the Department will have a strong interest in investigating and understanding the mechanisms of disease. The course year starts in February and ends in November and is only available full time.

Admission requirements

In addition to satisfying the Bachelor of Science (Degree with Honours) entry requirements, students are required to have completed stream specific prerequisites. Intended learning outcomes

The course is composed of a laboratory based research project, supported by course work, which will give students experience in the areas of:

  • Design and execution of experiments
  • Learning new laboratory techniques and procedures
  • Construction of a title, hypothesis and relevant aims for a project
  • Acquisition, interpretation and critical analysis of data
  • Reporting of experimental data, through the preparation of a Thesis report, in a concise and scientific manner consistent with that published in scientific manuscripts
  • Oral communication of results via presentations to a scientific audience

Structure

100 credit points

The Honours program consists of 100 credit points completed over 12 months full time (or part time equivalent) comprising of two (2) Advanced Coursework subjects and a Research Project.

To be awarded Honours with a specialisation in Pathology, students must successfully complete the following:

  • BIOM40001 - Introduction to Biomedical Research (12.5 points)
  • PATH40002 - Critical Analysis of Pathology Research (12.5 points)
  • PATH40006 and PATH40007 - Clinical Path Research Project (75 points)

There are no elective subjects in this Honours program.

Research Component

Students must complete a total of 75 credit points of research across the duration of the Honours program. This is achieved by enrolling in a combination of the following subjects in the appropriate semesters.
