Intended learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this subject will:



  • gain experience in research in Australian Indigenous Studies.

Generic skills

At the completion of this subject, students should gain the following generic skills:

  • a sophisticated understanding of the role of theory in Australian Indigenous Studies;
  • the ability to undertake high-level individual research; and
  • a developed understanding of the ethical requirements of research in Australian Indigenous Studies.

Hurdle requirement: Students are required to attend a minimum of 80% of supervision meetings in order to qualify to have their written work assessed. Any student who fails to meet this hurdle without valid reason will not be eligible to pass the subject. This assessment statement applies to the entire enrolment across Parts 1 and 2 of the subject (i.e. AIND40007 and AIND40008 together):

Essays submitted after the due date without an extension will be penalised 2% per day. Essays submitted after two weeks of the assessment due date without a formally approved application for special consideration or an extension will only be marked on a pass/fail basis if accepted.

Time commitment details

This subject is taught over two consecutive semesters. Total time commitment for the subject is approximately 680 hours, inclusive of two semesters (thesis Part 1 and Part 2)

Additional delivery details

This is part of a 50 point thesis subject, continuing over two consecutive study periods.

Students are required to enrol in:

  • AIND40007 Australian Indigenous Thesis Part 1 (25 points) and
  • AIND40008 Australian Indigenous Thesis Part 2 (25 points), consecutively.

Students will receive a ‘CNT’ grade in the part 1 and results will be entered if and when both part 1 and 2 are completed.
