Students enrolled in the Master of Industrial Research (Chemistry) program are required to complete a 150 point Industry-based Research Project. The research project will be conducted within industry laboratories, supervised by a member of academic staff in the Faculty of Science and by the industry collaborator.
For how long and at what time within the enrolment the actual period of leave is to be taken needs to be negotiated with a student’s supervisors.
Intended learning outcomes
- an understanding of industry-relevant safety procedures and regulatory frameworks
- cognitive, technical and creative skills to investigate, analyse and solve problems related to chemical industries.
- communication and technical skills to disseminate industrially-relevant research results to specialist and non-specialist audiences
- mastery of theoretical knowledge of the research topic and the ability to apply such knowledge to solving problems in the chemical industry

- Minimum of 12 months research project to be undertaken in industry environment
- Adherence to work-place OH&S requirements during industry placement
- The ability to observe work-place confidentiality requirements during industry placement

A major thesis/project report, page limit of 60 pages, due after the student has enrolled in 150 points of the Research Project. The thesis will be examined by at least two members of academic staff from the relevant University department (not the primary University-based supervisor), and at least one external expert in the field.

An oral examination (viva) on the content of the thesis/research report, with a panel consisting of at least two members of academic staff from the relevant department and one industry expert external to the University
