This subject prepares Teacher Candidates to teach the Victorian Certificate of Education Environmental Science study design. This is a multidisciplinary subject encompassing studies in chemistry, physics, geology, meteorology, ecology, biodiversity and economic, sociocultural and political perspectives.
The Teacher Candidate is supported in their development of skills and pedagogies to enhance the learning experiences of VCE Environmental Science students through their participation in workshops and completion of the required assignments. Assignment 1 involves presenting and evaluating a class demonstration and/or practical experience related to VCE Environmental Science. In Assignment 2, Teacher Candidates interpret the VCE Environmental Science Curriculum to design a unit of work.
ICT is recognised and used as an essential component of contemporary science practice and will be embedded in the Environmental Science Learning Area subject to support conceptual understanding and enhance student learning.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject students should be able to:

- Demonstrate knowledge of the interdisciplinary nature of science as a human endeavour (Graduate Standard 2.1)
- Demonstrate ways to use science investigation skills in both laboratory and field work settings, in a sequence of learning, that demonstrates knowledge of effective learning environments (Graduate Standard 2.1, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5)
- Evaluate contemporary science-based issues of local and global significance and demonstrate curriculum knowledge to formatively assess students in a learning sequence (Graduate Standard 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 5.1)
- Apply and evaluate knowledge of teaching and learning pedagogies to extend students understandings and abilities to critically assess issues using research based evidence (Graduate Standard 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 5.1)

Prerequisites
Teacher Candidates must meet the minimum academic study requirements for teaching in specialist areas, in accordance with the Victorian Institute of Teaching's Specialist Area Guidelines (http://www.vit.vic.edu.au/registering-as-a-teacher/teaching-programs/standards-for-accreditation-of-programs), for entry into this subject.
