Students are to participate in the day-to-day operation of a laboratory working on experiments related to human decision-making, actively engaging in its tasks and projects, in order to acquire on-the-job experience with the practical aspects of designing, managing and analysing experiments, become accustomed with team work, and to help create science. To the extent it is practically possible given other coursework, the student is allowed to complete the laboratory assignment overseas in a collaborating laboratory.
Intended learning outcomes
On successful completion of this subject students should be able to:
- Acquire a practical understanding of how science is done
- Plan each stage of a scientific research project
- Work in teams
- Engage in in-depth scientific discourse
Generic skills
- High level of development: written communication; interpretation and analysis; critical thinking.
- Moderate level of development: collaborative learning; formulating problems; problem solving;team work; application of theory to practice; accessing data and other information from a range of sources.
- Some level of development: oral communication; statistical reasoning; designing experiments; synthesis of data and other information; evaluation of data and other information; use of computer software.
