This subject provides an overview of the elements supporting the promotion of sustainable leadership and governance practices in tertiary education. It will provide participants with knowledge and insights in these areas:
- history of tertiary education sector’s engagement with sustainability development
- roles and responsibilities for leadership by governing bodies and executive officers
- accounting for sustainability
- tertiary institutions as drivers for the promotion of sustainable citizenship
- case studies and exemplars of sustainable practices in tertiary education
Intended learning outcomes
On completion, participants should be able to apply what they have learned by:
- understanding the background and theoretical drivers for positioning sustainability development as a key tertiary education sector concern
- describing different models for sustainable governance for tertiary education institutions
- describing different models for sustainable leadership for tertiary education institutions
- assessing the level of engagement within their own institutions in relation to human and environmental sustainability practices.
Generic skills
On completing this subject, participants should be able to:
- communicate with people who work in different cultures and contexts
- investigate policy and strategy problems, and generate options to resolve them
- assess the risks and benefits of different solutions to management problems
- apply accepted policies and principles to different kinds of cases
- make well-informed management decisions that consider specific contexts.
