This subject prepares students for practice in a range of music therapy methods to be used in sensitive therapeutic contexts. It focuses on expert learning in the areas of improvisation and song writing, the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music, re-producing existing repertoire. Skill development is focused on composing songs and making music with people whose needs require insightful therapeutic guidance and reflexive practice. Learning focuses on developing expertise in the methods already introduced, including processing verbal responses to musical experiences through therapeutic conversations with groups and individuals. Students will also develop further production skills in recording and producing repertoire in authentic and sensitive ways.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- compose songs with individuals for the development of insights and interpersonal growth;
- use expert and sensitive improvisational skills (vocal, instrumental, and electronic media) to facilitate transformative therapeutic experiences;
- facilitate therapeutic insights through reflection on a range of musical repertoire;
- apply skills in music arrangement to multi-track recording of known songs.
Generic skills
On completion of this subject students should have:
- developed skills in listening to others;
- identified methods for self-care and the avoidance of burn-out;
- developed skills in communicating clearly.
