Overview
The TESOL specialisation is part of the Master of Applied Linguistics.
This specialisation is focused on theories and research related to language acquisition, learning and pedagogy, as well as practical approaches to the design of language programs and curricula.
Intended learning outcomes
- Describe current issues and debates in language teaching and learning research;
- Develop awareness of different language learning theoretical frameworks;
- Analyze language learning data from different perspectives;
- Critically evaluate language learning research and its pedagogical applications

Structure
150 credit points
Students are required to complete the program requirements/structure from the year that they commenced their program. All required compulsory, core and capstone subjects must be completed to be eligible to graduate from the program.
150 point program
Duration: 1.5 years full-time / up to 3 years part-time
- two compulsory subjects (25 points)
- capstone subject (12.5 points)

elective subjects (112.5 points) including:
- Students with an ESL background can take a maximum of 25 points from the ESL elective list
- Remaining points must be selected from the graduate elective subject list
Capstone Subjects which are not taken as the Capstone for this Specialisation may be taken as Elective subjects.
Capstone Stream 3:
Students in the TESOL specialisation must take at least 25 points of TESOL Capstone subjects
Capstone Stream 3: LING90003 Research in Applied Linguistics (12.5 points) or LING90005 Quantitative Methods in Language Studies (12.5 points) and LING90012 Second Language Acquisition (12.5 points)
Purpose: An opportunity to integrate knowledge and research skills within the TESOL specialisation
