Similar to Critical and Theoretical Studies 5, this subject comprises a series of seminars developed by individual staff dealing with topics and issues in contemporary art theory, aesthetics, criticism and art history.
Each seminar is delivered at a level of conceptualisation that assumes familiarity with the artistic history and critical terminology attained from the previous two years of study. The seminar content reflects particular research initiatives of staff presenting and provides opportunity for students to explore in depth a specific theme that is relevant to contemporary cultural movements and is intellectually innovative in its field.
Critical and Theoretical Studies 6 develops from Critical and Theoretical Studies 1–4, introducing more advanced modes of critical interpretation and analysis in the visual arts, and is designed to complement accompanying studio-based programs.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- identify contemporary works of art and social contexts in relationship to individual student interests and studio practice;
- interpret and appraise terminology and ideas used in the critical understanding of contemporary art and related current cultural topics, including fields of social, political, scientific and philosophical thinking;
- analyse contemporary visual art in relation to current cultural topics, including fields of social, political, scientific and philosophical thinking;
- devise and employ research methods for critically analysing contemporary visual art;
- apply appropriate skills in academic literacy and contemporary visual arts research methodologies.
Generic skills
- An ability to comprehend and apply methods and objectives of argument, in both verbal presentation and written expression;
- An ability to conduct relevant and coherent research investigation;
- An ability to express critical responses in peer reviewing circumstances and group discussion;
- An ability to convey and critically evaluate abstract and theoretical concepts.
