Students will be placed in University of Melbourne Symphonic Ensembles for intensive training in all aspects pertaining to performing in a large ensemble setting.
A focused approach to the rehearsal, recording, and performance of a broad range of works from across the symphonic canon and new works will be addressed through the guidance of specialist staff.
Other topics addressed will include rehearsal conduct/etiquette and knowledge of performance styles.
Intended learning outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- demonstrate the basic skills required to perform and record as a member of a symphony orchestra;
- communicate appropriately with a conductor and other members of the orchestra;
- apply general styles of performance for orchestral repertoire;
- Demonstrate an awareness of differing performance styles for repertoire throughout history;
- distinguish between performing in primary and accompanying roles;
- demonstrate a basic understanding of how to approach new works;
- work collaboratively with other musicians.
