Overview

Students will be placed in University of Melbourne Symphonic Ensembles for intensive training in all aspects pertaining to performing in a large ensemble setting.

A focused approach to the rehearsal, recording, and performance of a broad range of works from across the symphonic canon and new works will be addressed through the guidance of specialist staff.

Other topics addressed will include rehearsal conduct/etiquette and knowledge of performance styles.

Intended learning outcomes

On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:

  • demonstrate the skills required to perform and record as a member of a symphony orchestra;
  • communicate appropriately with a conductor and other members of the orchestra;
  • apply the breadth of styles required for the performance of orchestral repertoire;
  • discuss differing performance styles for repertoire throughout history;
  • demonstrate familiarity with a significant portion of the symphonic canon;
  • perform in accompanying roles;
  • approach new works confidently; and,
  • work collaboratively with other musicians.
