This subject will provide students with the scientific basis for cancer and haematology cancer care. In this subject, students will explore and discuss the biology, presentation, diagnosis and treatment of haematologic malignancies in specialist cancer nursing care to prepare and support and assess people affected with these cancers. Students will examine different supportive care needs of people affected by haematologic malignancies, different interdisciplinary approaches and the skills analyse and critique best practice treatment strategies in the management of people affected by haematologic malignancies.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate integration of core principles covered in the subject and its pre-requisite, the Foundations of Cancer Nursing, to develop practice knowledge to provide specialist cancer nursing care that addresses actual and potential disease and treatment related health needs.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the biology, presentation, diagnosis and treatment of haematologic malignancies in specialist cancer nursing care to prepare, support and assess people affected by these cancers.
- Demonstrate an understanding of best practice specialist nursing care in the management of people affected by haematologic malignancies.
- Identify supportive care needs of people affected by haematologic malignancies and evidence-based interdisciplinary interventions to meet these needs.
