This subject inducts students into short-deadline workflows and projects in an operational publishing house. Over five days, students undertake writing and publishing projects in the Publishing program’s teaching press, Grattan Street Press, under the supervision of academic staff, and to deadline, as part of the teaching press’s ongoing publication schedule. Students also participate in two masterclasses with leading authors and/or editors, designed to refine writing and editing skills employed in book publishing.
Intended learning outcomes
Students who complete this subject should:
- Acquire practical understanding of editing, production and marketing workflows in a publishing house operating with best practices;
- Acquire experience of the editorial judgement involved in manuscript assessment;
- Acquire and demonstrate skills for writing and editing to short deadlines;
- Acquire and demonstrate skills for editing according to genre.
Generic skills
Students who complete this subject should acquire:
- Additional research and written communication skills through professional writing and supervised discussion.
- Project management skills, through completion of short-deadline publishing projects

Admission into one of the following: MC-PUBCOM Master of Publishing and Communications, D01LF Master of Creative Writing, Publishing and Editing
Permission of coordinator is required to enrol in the subject.

Applications open on the first business day of November and close three weeks later. First preference is given to students who meet the eligibility requirements and have successfully completed PUBL90015 Grattan Street Press. Oversubscription is resolved by ranking of academic results in the prerequisite subjects. Students are informed of their enrolment application outcome in first week of December. Any vacancies through student withdrawal to be filled by reference to the rankings.
