Plant Science
Overview
A Plant Science major will provide the springboard for students in entering careers or research in all fields requiring a solid understanding of plants and their environments. Graduates will develop a comprehensive integrated knowledge of the biology of plants as well as both field and laboratory skills. This major will include knowledge from all aspects of plant biology from cells to ecosystems, by enabling students to complete an integrated subject on plant evolution or an advanced lab and coursework subject in plant biotechnology and molecular biology combination with a suite of specialist subjects in specific subdiscipline fields.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this major, students should be able to:
- Categorise the biology of plants from molecular to field scales, and the technologies used to study them
- Apply field and laboratory techniques in the study of plants
- Compare plant diversity within a global and Australian context
- Critically evaluate empirical arguments
- Design and conduct plant focused experiments or empirical studies
- Apply statistical methods in the analysis and interpretation of data
- Evaluate the role of plant sciences to meet local and global issues such as food security, biodiversity conservation and climate change
- Write and give oral presentations to effectively communicate research findings
- Work effectively, responsibly and safely in an individual or team context; work collaboratively to accomplish common goals; understand and apply laboratory or field safety measures.
