The Diploma in Computing will provide students in almost all areas of study with the option of complementing their principal undergraduate major with a program in the IT area, designed to give them familiarity with a range of data manipulation and presentation techniques. The delivery format via a concurrent diploma is designed to build on and extend students’ main study, with the expectation that students will contribute problems and challenges from their main study area to their Diploma subjects.
Entry requirements
1. In order to be considered for entry, applicants must have:
- Concurrent enrolment in a University of Melbourne undergraduate degree (see Note below); and
- A weighted average of at least 65% in their current study; and
- Successfully completed a minimum of 50 points of University study including the core subject COMP10001 Foundations of Computing.
Meeting these requirements does not guarantee selection
2. In ranking applications, the Selection Committee will consider:
- Prior academic performance.
3. The Selection Committee may seek further information to clarify any aspect of an application in accordance with the Academic Board rules on the use of selection instruments.
4. Applicants will satisfy the University’s English language requirements for the Diploma by meeting the English Language requirements for the Bachelor degree in which they are enrolled concurrently.
Notes:
- Entry to the Diploma excludes the following students: Bachelor of Science students majoring in any of: Computing and Software Systems, Data Science or Informatics, or students in the Bachelor of Design majoring in Computing or Digital Technologies.
- Students are permitted to enter the Diploma at the start of any semester before the completion of the companion undergraduate degree.
- Students may cross-credit 50 points for Diploma subjects taken as part of the undergraduate degree.
- The mode of undertaking the diploma, either Fast Track or by addition of a full year to their degree will depend on each student’s particular circumstances (i.e. the overload policy requires a particular level of performance/achievement be attained for permission to overload).
- Course advice need to be sought prior to applying for the Diploma.
Diploma places cannot be deferred and you cannot be admitted in the Diploma if you are within the last 50 points of your undergraduate degree.

Upon completion of the Diploma in Informatics, students should:
- Be able to demonstrate their understanding of the way information and communication technologies support integration of data from diverse sources;
- Be able to apply modern IT concepts and techniques to problems involving the acquisition, storage, manipulation, and presentation of data;
- Be able to critically analyse the information flows occurring in real-world data sharing situations and be able to design supporting on-line or web-based solutions; and
- Be able to provide informed advice to people in other disciplines about how best to implement on-line or web-based solutions to problems involving the acquisition, storage,manipulation, or presentation of domain-specific data.

Course structure
The Diploma in Computing requires the successful completion of 100 credit points.
- 100 credit points of compulsory, selective and elective subjects
- 12.5 credit points of Level 1 compulsory subjects
- 12.5 credit points of Level 3 selectives
- A maximum of 50 credit points of Level 1 and Level 2 electives
- Between 25 and 75 credit points of Level 3 electives
- Up to 50 points can be cross-credited from the student’s main or underlying degree. To graduate with an undergraduate degree and the Diploma, students must complete between 350 and 400 points across both programs.
Pathways
Depending on a student’s individual circumstances and their personal desire, the Diploma may be taken in a variety of “Fast Track” modes or by adding the full 100 points (i.e. one full year) to their degree.
Fast Track modes will involve cross-crediting of up to 50 points and/or overloading in one, two or all three years of the course. All students undertaking a Diploma must complete a minimum of 350 points and a maximum of 400 points for the degree plus the diploma.
Students in the BSc majoring in any of Computing and Software Systems, Data Science, or Informatics, and students in the BDes majoring in Computing, are not allowed to enroll in the Diploma in Computing.
