This online subject introduces students to the Still Life genre explored from a 21st Century perspective.
Engaging drawing and painting techniques and processes, this subject is designed for students who have little or no practical experience in art making. Commencing with observational drawing, students will be introduced to ways of visualizing relevant, abstract concepts as they relate to the still-life genre.
Multi-disciplinary investigations around the inanimate object will also focus on the dynamics of colour and pictorial space. Theoretical discussions will explore the human relationship to abstract ideas and the evolution of the still life convention. Projects will be set in both practical and theoretical areas.
Students will participate in live online classes, engage with online content including demonstrations, discussions and lectures. Ongoing feedback will be provided.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- demonstrate technical drawing and painting skills relevant to the Still Life genre, including observing and recording objects;
- distinguish historical and contemporary art within the genre of Still Life and discuss key ideas;
- demonstrate independent research in the field of painting and drawing still life subjects;
- produce original images leading to materially and conceptually developed artworks;
- evaluate technical processes, creative outcomes and their own development.
Generic skills
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- display an awareness of the graphic possibilities of a variety of concepts, materials and practices;
- exhibit evidence of skill development both pictorially and technically as a means of independent image making;
- indicate evidence of individual research in the relevant area of practice;
- demonstrate capacities for artistic imagination, creativity, transformation and interpretation;
- demonstrate practical skills in respect of critical analysis, problem solving;
- demonstrate an open, independent and inquiring attitude towards contemporary cultural developments and new ideas.

Ongoing feedback is provided to students through the subject's duration via live online classes. Students are required to upload photographs of weekly progress for teacher’s feedback and guidance. Additionally, a progress review will take place midway through the course, taking into account the following criteria: course engagement; work development.
