This subject is designed to help Fellows and Senior Fellows in the AFSE program develop their leadership skills through the study of well-known Indigenous leaders, theories of leadership and assessment of and reflection on their own leadership actions. The subject will critically examine concepts and definitions of leadership and how they have changed over time; Indigenous leadership within and outside formal roles and organisational settings; the exercise of leadership, power, and authority; and the role of values and ethics in leadership. Study, discussion and analysis of key leadership ideas will be complemented by experiential activities, case studies of Indigenous leaders, guest speakers, and opportunities for group discussion and critical self-reflection.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Develop a critical understanding of the main concepts in Indigenous leadership within their own and other contexts.
- Understand the role of leadership in bringing about social change making in, for and with Indigenous communities.
- Apply Indigenous leadership ideas and evaluate their effectiveness in local, national and international Indigenous contexts.
- Critically reflect on your own personal leadership understanding, experiences, insights and goals.

Prerequisites
Students must meet one of the following prerequisite options:
Option 1
Admission into one of the following:
- MC-SCL Master of Social Change Leadership
- GC-SCL Graduate Certificate in Social Change Leadership
OR
Option 2
Prior admission to the Atlantic Fellows For Social Equity program.
Corequisites
